University of WA Cherry Blossoms: What to Know Before you Go

Where is the University of WA

The University of Washington is the oldest University on the west coast. It has been in existence since 1861,Several extensions are located around the Puget Sound, the main campus is located in Seattle in the University District. You can reach the campus by car in 15-20 min from downtown; unless it's rush hour.

Thousands arrive at University of WA this time of year, to spend a day or afternoon with the beautiful cherry blossoms. This is a must see in the Evergreen State. I've been several times and never get bored of the views!

How to get to University of WA

By Bus: There are more than 60 bus routes serving the University District. Most of them have stops on the campus. 

By Light-rail: The UW light- rail stop is at Husky Stadium, a 45 minute ride from Sea-tac Airport. It will take you 15 minutes to walk from the UW light-rail stop to the Visitor Center. 

By Car: 

From Interstate 5 , Northbound or Southbound

*Important: DO NOT USE THE I-5 Express Lanes

• Take Exit 169 ( NE 45th St.) toward NE 45th Street
• Turn east on NE 45th
• Turn right on 15th Ave. NE and continue to NE 41st St.

When to Go

The best time to see cherry blossoms at the University of WA; is the end of March or early April. Last year we visited the 1st week of April, the trees were in full bloom.

Is it Free to Visit the Cherry Blossoms?

There is no charge to visit the Cherry Blossoms located on the University of WA campus.  Parking charges may apply, depending when you visit. 

Parking on the Campus

If you do decide to drive, it is recommended you arrive early in the day. There aren't a lot of options for visitor parking. When you arrive, visit one of the gatehouses to buy your parking permit. The attendant will direct you where to park.

If you decided to visit on the weekend; parking is free after 12 p.m. on Saturday and all day Sunday.

What to Wear

Early spring in Seattle is still on the cool side. It's rare to get warm days this time of year. The temperatures for late March and early April usually hover around 54-60 degrees. You may get lucky and get a 70 degree day, but highly unusual. Come prepared with a rain jacket and umbrella!

This breathtaking spot of course is popular for photo shoots and selfies for the gram. If you want to dress stylish for your visit, a long distressed jean coat and floral dress are a perfect choice.
