Lisbon’s stunning Comércio Square is a photographer’s paradise, where fashion meets history in a vibrant embrace. If you’re planning a fashion photo shoot in this iconic location, teaming up with a local photographer can elevate your vision to new heights. Here’s how to make the most of your shoot while capturing the essence of Lisbon.
Choosing the Right Time of Day
Timing is everything, especially when it comes to photo shoots in Lisbon. The golden hour—just after sunrise or before sunset—offers the best light for your fashion shots. The soft, diffused sunlight creates a magical atmosphere, perfect for highlighting textures and colors in your outfits.
I did my shoot with a local photographer mid-morning. I tried to do one earlier; the timing didn't work . Nevertheless the lighting turned out quite well! However if you can do your shoot close to sunrise, lighting will be better and there are less tourists photo bombing your pics!
Lisbon is known for its colorful architecture and lively streets, so your outfits should complement this stunning backdrop. Most times, it's better to opt for bold colors and striking patterns that pop against the warm hues of the square. I planned to wear a more colorful outfit, but ended up doing an impromptu shoot. The neural outfit I had on still worked okay.
Collaborating with a Local Photographer
Communication is key, so be clear about your vision and any specific shots you want. A good photographer will be just as invested in making your shoot a success as you are. I found a street photographer ( Lisbon Photo Official-His page is currently down on Instagram-check back later ) near the Rua Augusta Arch, a few steps from my hotel. Another option is scheduling a photo shoot through VIATOR.
Utilizing the Environment
Comércio Square is surrounded by breathtaking views, including the iconic Arco da Rua Augusta and the Tagus River. Use these features to enhance your photos. Play with angles: shoot from below to make the architecture look even more grand, or capture reflections in puddles after a rain shower.
Local artists often add a creative flair to the square, so don’t hesitate to incorporate some street art or performers into your shots. The more creative you get, the more unique your photos will be! Since I did an impromptu shoot, there wasn't time to plan different locales. A scheduled shoot definitely allows for more dramatic elements to be captured.
Embracing the Local Culture
Lisbon is steeped in culture, and your fashion shoot can reflect that. Consider incorporating elements like traditional Portuguese tiles or local cuisine into your looks. Perhaps wear a bold dress against the backdrop of a pastel-colored café or sip on a bica (a local espresso) between shots. This not only enhances your photos but also adds a narrative to your shoot, showcasing your style against the rich tapestry of Lisbon life.
Preparing for the Unexpected
Weather in Lisbon can be unpredictable, so come prepared. Bring a stylish umbrella just in case it decides to rain on your parade. It could even add a dramatic flair to your shoot! I visited Lisbon both times in June. Needless to say the weather was amazing-no rain on my parade!
Wrapping Up Your Shoot
After your session, reward yourself with a treat at a nearby café. Indulge in some pastéis de nata and reflect on the day. Review the shots with your photographer, and share your favorites on social media—don’t forget to tag your location.
With these tips, you’re well on your way to creating breathtaking fashion images in one of Europe’s most picturesque locales.
TIP: Research lots and plan your outfits months in advance of your trip. I put mine together a month before, and wasn't that happy with what I chose.
